Abstract

In modern structural engineering, the aesthetical value of structures becomes more and more prevalent, mainly at urban environments. Structures must fulfill not only functional requirements, but also be architectural milestones. As a result of these aesthetic considerations, some arch bridges have been built with inclined arches attached to the edge of the decks. This study analyzes whether the Nielsen hangers arrangement, which is so advantageous for vertical arches, is equally efficient in inclined arches. In this way, they have an out-of-plane response and, therefore, spatial behavior.
