Abstract
This paper shows the results of mining wastes classification review and mapping updating of each type and deposit of mining-metallurgical wastes located in rambla del Beal watershed (Cartagena), deposited over more than twenty centuries of mining activity. Underground mining is responsible of the most hazardous mining waste (active from the mid-19th century to the last third of the 20th century), while the largest volume of waste was generated by open-pit mining (from 1949 until the end of mining activities in the Sierra Minera de Cartagena-La Unión in 1991). The accumulations of wastes have been cataloged according to the mining metallurgical process that originated them and their disposal on the ground, which makes possible to spatially identify the distribution and extension occupied by the deposits that constitute a major problem for the immediate environment and for the Mar Menor lagoon.
