Abstract
The encapsulation of essential oils (EOs) by means of inclusion complexes in β-cyclodextrin is an efficient and low-cost technology to achieve a controlled release of EOs from active containers. This study determined the concentration of the AEs/β-CD inclusion complex in different areas after printing on the cardboard sheets (using UPLC (Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography)) and characterized its morphology using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The concentration of complex reached in the active sheets was 803.1 and 937.1 mg/m2 in areas of high concentration of complex with and without adhesive, respectively. In the case of areas of low concentration, this was 342.9 and 480.6 mg/m2 for the areas with and without adhesive, respectively. In the images obtained by SEM the morphology of the particles was observed. The results concluded that the concentration of complex, as well as its morphology, was optimal to ensure a controlled release.
