Abstract

The first research work about the geosites in the Region of Murcia was carried out in 1989, sponsored by the competent Natural Heritage Department. Since then, Geology research group from University of Murcia kept working in the inventory of these places and, mainly, awaring the society about its conservation needs through dissemination and valuing. In 2009 this research group was commissioned to do the first systematic study of Gosites. A survey was carried among the geoscientific community being answered by 25 researchers. The result was a list of 450 geosites, being more than 300 of them caves. 20 places from this list were chosen to be studied and delimited in detail using a standardized valuing method. Authors of this study considered that eight geosites were of global influence, six had a national interest and the other six had regional interest. This was the beginning of a systematic and official inventory for the department of the regional administration in charge of nature conservation, and to be used in legislation development, conservation, management and sustainable uses of the Geoheritage in Region of Murcia.
