Abstract

Vegetative osteospermum cultivars have great potential for using in urban gardening and as a potted plant. Potted plants of the variety 'Margarita Supreme Lilac' were grown in a greenhouse throughout the winter. The plants were irrigated with water of 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 dS·m-1, being irrigation volume and frequency the same for all conductivities. The aim of this experiment was to determine the saline irrigation tolerance of this osteospermum, assessing the effects of different levels of salinity on growth, the occurrence of chlorosis and necrosis in the leaves, and ion accumulation in plant. Increasing saline irrigation reduced plant height, slightly diminished aerial dry biomass, and encouraged the presence of basal leaves with necrotic damage; the rest of parameters were not altered. These results highlight a moderate salinity tolerance of osteospermum, making this plant an excellent choice for saline landscapes and gardens.
