Zusammenfassung

Many researchers indicate Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) as systems that may be potential substitutes for fossil fuels. One of the key factors for designing these devices is the separator since it affects directly their performance. In this work a method based on impedance spectroscopy has been used to calculate the internal resistance of polymer inclusion membranes (PIM) based on a selection of ionic liquids. The results show that this technique is suitable for predicting the performance of MFCs using the PIMs prepared. Among the ionic liquids studied, triisobutyl-(methyl)-phosphonium tosylate, [PI4,I4,I4,1+ ][TOS-]) showed the highest performance and similar chemical oxygen demand removal to Nafion®117.
