Resumo

To improve the geotechnical competences of students at the Civil Engineering School of UPM, we conducted a Project for Innovative Education based on the “Challenge Based Learning” methodology. Its main objective was to provide the students with a professional experience in geotechnical engineering, so that they increased their confidence on the geotechnical skills acquired during their degree, prior to their incorporation to industry. The proposed challenge was to design the repair works after slope failure, following similar approaches to those employed in industry. To facilitate the work of the students, and to improve their experience, several meeting with industry experts were arranged. This article describes the methodology employed, and the results obtained. Although the students valued the experience positively, only a few could complete the activity, due to a generalized dropout at approximately mid-length of the project. This paper analyzes the reasons for such dropouts, with the main one being the high work load that students had during the final part of the semester.
