Abstract
In this paper we analyze the microeconomic basis of the Baran-Sweezy's Economic Surplus Theory. This implies an extension of oligopoly theory to capitalistic economic development. Specifically we are interested in two concepts, the "sales effort" and the "economic irrationality", and their impact on monopolistic equilibrium. Under "sales effort", the employment level could be higher than in the traditional monopoly theory. "Economic irrationality" implies that scarce resources are used to generate new needs instead of satisfying existing ones
