#is paper presents the proposal of “#e traditional agricultural system of the Ricote Valley” (Murcia) as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS), an initiative promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Firstly, it explains the theoretical framework and the goals of the GIAHS program, also indicating the procedure that must be followed in the designation process. Secondly, the unique values and features that distinguish the Ricote Valley as an agro-cultural territory of national and international relevance, are addressed. In the same way, the methodology used in the development of the project is described, highlighting its participatory character that involves institutions, protagonists of the system and civil society
