Résumé
The agricultural sector is facing increasing pressure to ensure food security, lower environmental impact and better living conditions in the rural community. This can be achieved with the Sustainable Intensive Agriculture. Here, we have analysed the productive, environmental and social impacts of olive orchards with different tree densities and management systems, with the aim of establishing whether olive crop intensification is suitable for facing the mentioned challenges. Our findings show that the sustainability of olive production depends more on the management system than on tree density. Super high density olive orchards, if properly managed, are more profitable and have greater productivity than traditional olive orchards, and may show better results concerning the environmental and social impacts. We conclude that super high density olive orchards are valid for the Sustainable Intensive Agriculture.
