Abstract

The Mar Menor, unlike other coastal lagoons, is oligotrophic and in recent decades derived from agricultural and urban pressures, and coastal planning of little environmental integration has triggered eutrophic episodes that the system has tried to control through proliferations of jellyfish, algae, phytoplankton and zooplankton, in an attempt to control the primary production system from top to bottom. The Government of the Region of Murcia during 2022 carries out a removal of algae in order to avoid putrefaction and decomposition in shallow areas that generate sludge, and minimizing the incorporation of nutrients from the sediment.
