Resumen

The aim of this work is the evaluation of chemical composition of waste of the mining area of Cartagena-La Union and its environmental risk on surface, ground and sea water. The results shows that the concentration of lead (Pb) is higher in the waste material than in the original deposit. Whereas in case of zinc (Zn) it is the opposite behaviour. Due to the chemical composition of these wastes they can be classified in to "Type II" according to the environmental norm of the European Community. The principal environmental risk is due to the erosion process caused by rainwater and physical properties of the wastes: low cohesion and fine particles.
