Resumen
In recent years the Microbial fuel cells have become the purpose of many research studies due to the importance of finding renewable and efficient energy sources. It has been shown that these systems could be the perfect alternative for fossil fuels in the future as they can produce electricity from different types of waste such as municipal wastewater, brewing or paper industry, what make possible to take advantage of them. The booming renewable energy field and the numerous benefits of the microbial fuel cell technology has increased the importance of the studies on these devices over the last decade, being easy to find a lot of scientific works leading to the reduction of its components and the improvement of efficiency. This study summarizes the state of art of the microbial fuel cell technology, with particular emphasis on aspects such as the type of substrate used, the components of the microbial fuel cells (electrodes, membranes, etc.) and new configurations.
