Zusammenfassung

Structural design is usually based on the experience of the designer. Sometimes this experience is embodied in pre-dimensioning formulas that, although they offer good results, sometimes have inefficiencies when compared with current optimization techniques that take into account economic and environmental dimensions. This paper compares experience-based pre-sizing rules with optimization techniques. It is applied to the case of prestressed lightened slab bridge deck design. The result of the research highlights the importance of applying methods based on heuristic optimization and metamodeling to update the experience of designers and to propose new pre-dimensioning formulas more adjusted to economic and environmental optimization. In addition, the work provides pre-dimensioning nomograms, with the minimum amount of data possible, which may be useful to the designer in his preliminary designs.
