Industrial process heating accounts for the largest share of energy demand in the manufacturing sector. However, current heating systems have certain limits, such as the use of fossil fuels. The aim of the EU-funded ASTEP project is to overcome these drawbacks by developing an innovative solar heating concept for industrial processes. It will combine a Fresnel-type solar collector and thermal energy storage based on phase change materials with active and passive heat transfer enhancement techniques, which will be integrated into the control system to maintain continuous operation. This innovative system will be able to cover a significant percentage of the thermo-energy demand of the processing industry at temperatures and latitudes where current concepts have failed. The project will provide a competitive alternative to fossil fuel consumption. The ASTEP project is funded by the European Union, through the Horizon Europe (HE) programme.
