The second subproject, titled Antennas and Circuits for Efficient Wireless Sensor Networks using Low-Orbit Satellites (ARIELS), will propose novel multi-beam leaky-wave antennas (LWAs), for low-orbit satellite-based Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs). Satellitebased LPWANs will offer global connectivity for IoT and M2M (Machine-to-Machine) communications, especially in rural areas where no reliable coverage of cellular terrestrial networks can be guaranteed. In these scenarios, low-power battery-dependent wireless sensors must connect with small satellites in a very efficient way, thus maximizing their autonomy and useful lifetime. Regarding the coordinate project, ARIELs will support the antenna systems (parabolic reflector, rotor and tracking system) of the two planned Earth stations for performing communication experiments with existing small satellites. Finally, this subproject will also lead all technological developments of the PCB-based transceiver modules for the C-band demonstrator, including the integration of active components (RF modulator and amplifiers), and the advanced use of planar technology for the passive elements. In this area, more compact solutions for interconnecting elements and filters (providing more selective responses to attenuate undesired interferences), and the design of small-sized radiating patches with integrated filtering devices (for use on-board future CubeSats), will be researched. The potential use of greener materials (in
