Zusammenfassung

Cruise traffic has registered a remarkable growth during the decade of the 1990s and especially within the first 15 years of the 21st century. The cruise industry has a certain lack of research in certain scientific aspects related to the maritime sector. The goal of this article is to explore into the particular characteristics of the cruise market, especially focusing on the shipowner’s structure and fleet distribution. Specifically, the article focuses on the following research questions. Who are the market participants and what cruise vessel ownership scenario is to be expected? How does the cruise market structure look like, in terms of number and size distribution of shipowners? To answer the latter question several methods of concentration measures are applied. By answering the above questions, this article aims to provide some key features of the cruise industry that will be useful to practitioners and academics linked to the shipbuilding industry, maritime transport and cruise ports. Furthermore, the article aims to present an integrated overview of the functions of these three maritime stakeholders of the cruise industry.
